End The Corporate State
The Annual Township Meeting is under attack by Illinois lawmakers. This unique tool us ‘little people’ have allows ordinary citizens to place questions on statewide ballots. However, Illinois politicians want to even further remove our rights by lessening democracy at the local level. If you want to help save Illinois’ democracy please help. Occupy Naperville voted to fully support this action at the October 19 2013 General Assembly.
The Illinois General Assembly reconvenes Monday October 21st and the veto override vote of HB2454, which will determine whether we will retain our right to place substantive advisory public questions on the ballot via the Annual Township Meeting, is on the docket for Tuesday October 22nd, so time is of the essence. Please call your legislators.
If the Illinois House and Senate is successful in overriding Governor Quinn’s amendatory veto of HB2454, they will stop citizens from in the future placing on the ballot advisory public questions, such as the Move to Amend question, at their Annual Township Meeting.
HB2454 would drastically reduce our ability to use the simplest way to get a referendum on the ballot – through a procedure at the Annual Township Meeting. At the Annual Township Meeting questions can be added to the ballot by a small group of voters, as an alternative to door-to-door petitioning a process that can be expensive and burdensome.
We need to retain this right to continue to educate our citizens about campaign finance reform issues, and to influence our U.S. Representatives and Senators in the future. It is vital for our cause. Shockingly a majority of the elected members of the Illinois House and Senate don’t agree and have passed a bill to silence Illinois voters during future Illinois elections.
